While a class set will be used for class study, students will be asked to access electronic extractions (PDF documents) from their home computer.A link to these electronic documents is found on my Google site.

The units listed above will be supplemented with our lab program entitled CPOScience.Classroom time will focus on using this equipment for in depth data analysis and concept development.The CPO Lab Curriculum chosen for this course is for intermediate students with good algebraic skills.

Grading

The following grading scale will be used:

93 – 100%A

90 – 92%A-

87 – 89%B+

83 – 86%B

80 – 82%B-

77 - 79%C+

73 – 76%C

70 – 72%C-

67 – 69%D+

60 – 62%D-

Tests: 80 % of grade

Each test will have a conceptual and lab component.The conceptual section will be based on our class textbook and homework assignments.The lab section focuses on our lab experiments.

Re-Assessments:

Each student is expected to meet the basic standards laid out bythe Minnesota Department of Education. If a standard is not met in agiven summative assessment (i.e. student does not achieve a 75% or higher) thestudent will have an opportunity to take a standards based re-assessment. Due to the basic nature of these re-assessments, they will be graded on aPass/Fail system. Passing will equate to a score of 75%.

Retakes will be made available to any student who wishes to follow the following protocol:

  1. Make an appointment with Mr. Pokorski to discuss results.
  2. Fill out a retake form with Mr. Pokorski which outlines the following procedure:
    1. Make all test corrections under Mr. Pokorski’s supervision
    2. Redo all applicable WebAssign assignments.These can be rescheduled and completed at home.
    3. Redo all applicable lab work.
    4. Schedule time to retake the test.
  1. The retake score will be entered into the grade book, even if it is lower than the original score.

Labs: 15% of grade

At the beginning of each unit, students will receive a lab packet.It is the responsibility of each student to participate and finish the labs, for the packets will be assessed based on completionand accuracy.Because these labs are foundational to learning physics, they should not be taken lightly.Accurate and thorough packets will be a valuable resource for each written assessment.

Homework Assessment: 5% of grade

We will be using an online service called WebAssign for weekly assignments.Each student will create a personal password enabling access from any location with an internet connection.The homework questions will be taken from our physics textbook.The benefits of using this environment are as follows:

  1. Students will get immediate feedback regarding their progress.
  2. Second chance opportunities for each question are built into the system.
  3. Students tend to enjoy working online.I have seen a dramatic increase in homework completion and quality since using this service.
  4. Student homework cannot be misplaced.

Each scheduled assignment will have a completion date and time (usually 11:59 pm).After this time, all students will be locked out of the assignment.I will then download the scores and enter them into my grade book.Students who fail to finish the assignment have the following options:

  1. Keep their score.
  2. Ask for an extension.For this to happen, a student must ask me to reschedule their assignment.Upon doing so, he/she will be able to log back in and finish.Because the assignment is late, I will implement the following policy:
    1. A student can earn up to 75% of the original assigned value if completed within the negotiated time frame.
    2. If this date is not met, a student can earn up to 50% of the original assigned value if completed before the corresponding unit test.
    3. Assignments will not be rescheduled for points after the corresponding test date has passed.These can; however, be rescheduled for the purpose of practice in preparation for a retake.

  1. Lab notebook:This will be used for assignments, note-taking, and some lab work.
  2. Calculator
