Block/allow Websites Selectively to Users of Your Computer

Comodo Internet Security allows you to specify a single or a group of website(s) that can be selectively allowed or blocked to different users of your computer. Configuring the website filtering involves two steps:

To define website categories

  1. Open 'Tasks' interface by clicking the green curved arrow at top right of the 'Home' screen.

  2. Open 'Firewall Tasks' by clicking 'Firewall Tasks' from the Tasks interface and click 'Open Advanced Settings'.

  3. Click 'Website Filtering' under Firewall from the left hand side pane.

  4. Ensure that the 'Enable Website Filtering Filtering' checkbox is selected.

  5. Click 'Categories' tab from the 'Website Filtering' interface.

  1. Click the handle from the bottom center of the 'Categories' pane, click 'Add' from the options and choose 'Add Category' from the drop-down. The 'Edit Property' dialog will open.

  1. Enter a name for the category and click OK. The new category will be created and added under the 'Categories' tab.

  2. Select the category, click the handle at the bottom of the 'Categories' pane, click 'Add' then choose 'Add Website' from the drop-down menu. The 'Add Website' dialog will open:

  1. Enter the full URL or a part of URL with a wildcard character '*' of the website(s) to be included in the category.

  • To add a specific website/webpage, enter the full URL of the website/webpage
  • To include all sub-domains of website, add a wildcard character and a period in front of the URL. For example, *.friskywenches.com will cover friskywenches.com, login.friskywenches.com, pictures.friskywenches.com, videos.friskywenches.com and so on.
  • To include all the websites with URLs that start with a specific string, add a wildcard character after the string. For example, “pizza*” will cover 'pizzahut.com', pizzacorner.com, and so on.
  • To include all the websites with URLs that contain a specific string, add the wildcard character before and after the string. For example, “*pizza*” will cover hotpizza.com, spicypizza.com and so on.

The website(s) will be added to the category.

  1. Repeat the process to add more websites.

  2. Click OK in the 'Advanced Settings' interface to save your settings

To create rules for selectively blocking or allowing websites to users

  1. Open 'Firewall Tasks' by clicking 'Firewall Tasks' from the Tasks interface and click 'Open Advanced Settings'.

  2. Click 'Website Filtering' under Firewall from the left hand side pane.

  3. Click 'Rules' tab from the 'Website Filtering' interface.

  4. Click the handle at the bottom of the Rules interface and select 'Add':

  1. Enter a name for your new filter in the 'Website Filtering Rule' dialog.

  1. Select the categories that should be added to the filter:

  • Click the handle at the bottom of the 'Category' pane and choose 'Add'.
Unblock my sites

  • Select a category and click 'OK' to add it to your rule. Repeat the process to add more categories.

The 'categories' window contains a list pre-defined Comodo categories and any user created categories. Comodo categories cannot be modified.

  • Comodo Safe Sites - Websites that are considered safe according to global whitelist
  • Comodo Phishing Sites - Websites that lead to phishing websites, as per dynamically updated Comodo Blacklist
  • Comodo Malware Sites - Websites that may inject malware into your system, as per dynamically updated Comodo Blacklist

For more details on creating and modifying user specified categories, Refer to the section Defining or Modifying Website Categories

  1. Add Users or User Groups to whom the rule should be applied:

  • Click the handle at the bottom of the 'Restrictions' pane and click 'Add'. The 'Select User or Group' dialog will appear:

  • Enter the names of the users to whom the filter is to be applied in the 'Enter the object name to select' text box with the format or @. Alternatively, click 'Advanced' then 'Find Now' to locate specific users. Click 'OK' to confirm the addition of the users.

Important Note to IE 11 users: If you are using Internet Explorer 11 and above, it is mandatory to add the user group 'ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES' to the Restrictions list in addition to the added users for each rule you create.

The rule will take full effect only on adding this user group.

To add 'ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES' to the restrictions list

  • Click 'Advanced' in the 'Select User or Group' dialog

  • Click OK

  • After adding target users or groups, you next need to specify whether those users should be allowed or blocked from viewing the websites in the category or they should be asked if they want to continue. This is done by modifying the link in the 'Restrictions' column:

Allow- The websites in the categories can be accessed by the user.

Block - The websites in the categories cannot be accessed by the user.

Ask- An alert will be displayed in the browser if the user tries to access any of the websites in the category. The user can decide whether or not to continue.

  • Use the 'Logging' switch to choose whether or not attempts to access a categorized website are logged.
  1. Click 'OK' to save your new rule. The rule will become effective immediately.

You can disable or enable rules at any time using the switch under the 'Enable Rule' column.

Several options are available for blocking a website. Consider one of the options below, depending on your needs.

Tip

The list below was created in the order of what we recommend the most.

Blocking a website on a router

Most home networks today have a network router for sharing an Internet connection between multiple devices and can even block websites. We recommend blocking a website through a router because it can be password protected, prevents blocks from being bypassed, and because it blocks all devices. Blocking on the router can prevent your children from accessing a page (e.g., Facebook) on the computer, and any cell phone or tablet connected to your home network.

To block a website on a router, connect to the home network router. For most routers, this is done by opening a browser and visiting the default router address: http://192.168.1.1

If this address does not work or you're having trouble accessing your router setup, visit the link below.

After connecting to the router, block a website through one of the below features. Unfortunately, each router setup is different, so you'll need to find one of the below settings for your manufacturer of the router. Generally, one of these options will be available under a 'Security,' 'Parental control,' or 'Firewall' tab or button.

  • URL Filter - Some routers may have a URL filter section, which allows you to enter the URL for each website you want to block.
  • Parental controls - New and more advanced routers have a section dedicated to parental controls, which gives you not only the option to block websites, but also specify the times the Internet can be accessed.
  • Firewall - Finally, if neither of the above options is available, the router should offer some type of filtering through the Firewall router settings.
Note

Although blocking a website on the router is one of the best ways to prevent access to websites, a child could still access the website through other means. They could connect to a neighbor's network if it's unprotected or use their cell phone's data service (e.g., 4G) to access the website. If you see any open networks in your neighborhood, try to educate your neighbors about the security vulnerabilities of leaving a network open.

Block a website using Family Safety

Note

Blocking a site using these steps only blocks the website on one computer. Any other computer, phone, or tablet connected to your home network can access the site you're blocking.

The new versions of Windows include a Family Safety feature that enable parents to set up usage rules, allowing them to control which websites their children view. If you're running Windows 7 or 8, open Family Safety from either the Windows Start menu or Start Screen. Type family and click the Family Safety or parental controls program in the search results.

Note

In Windows 10, parental controls are managed online through the Microsoft accounts website. User accounts that are a part of 'Your Family' can be managed through your online Microsoft account.

When open, you see a screen similar to the example below which gives you access to web filtering, time limits, logs, and the type of games that can be played.

Blocking a website in Windows

Note

Blocking a site using these steps only blocks the website on one computer. Any other computer, phone, or tablet connected to your home network can still access the site you're blocking.

A website can be blocked on any Windows computer by editing the hosts file (also see the lmhost file).

Locate the hosts file in Windows Explorer.

  • Windows XP and later versions: C:WINDOWSsystem32driversetc
  • Windows 2000 & NT: C:WINNTsystem32driversetc
  • Windows 98 & ME: C:WINDOWS

Navigate to the proper directory using Windows Explorer. Double-click the hosts file. Choose Notepad from the list of programs to open and edit the file in Notepad.

Find the line below:

Right underneath it, add the following lines (replacing badsite.com with the site you want to block):

Click File in the menu bar and select Save. Close the file. The site should be blocked in all web browsers and now instead of trying to access that site, the computer will redirect you to the localhost.

Blocking a website using software

Note

Blocking a site using these steps only blocks the website on one computer. Any other computer, phone, or tablet connected to your home network can still access the site you're blocking.

You can also block websites using a software firewall or a filter (such as a parent control Internet filter). Also, many antivirus software programs come with a firewall or have an option to obtain one from them. Filtering software may also be available through the same companies or could be obtained separately. To configure these pieces of software to block websites, you need to follow the instructions provided by the software vendor.
